It can be difficult to start a conversation with the young people in your life around dating, sex and safety when this is a conversation that might not have been brought up frequently when you were younger. Or maybe you’re nervous that you might not say the “right” words.
Just remember, you are the primary sexuality educators for the children you care for and-believe it or not-they want to hear this information from you. Research shows that 57 percent of Nebraska teens have sex before graduating from high school. Nationally, 18 is the average age young people have sex for the first time.
Talking to young people about sex can be challenging, but we’ve got you! Parents/caregivers matter and these conversations are important guidance. Young people want to have open and honest conversations with you. Get the resources you need and get started now. Remember, this is ongoing dialogue. Talk early, talk often.
